The Buddha: Arts & Crafts

Japanese Buddhism, (日本の仏教 or Nihon no Bukkyō), is one of the major religions practiced in Japan. Some aspects are different and unique to Japanese Buddhism, but like all branches of Buddhism, The Buddha is the highest being of enlightenment. The Buddha means "the awakened one" and was the title given to the founder of Buddhism, Siddhārtha Gautama. According to Buddhist teachings, Siddhārtha was born in Nepal and found enlightenment whilst mediating under the Bodhi Tree, (also known as 悟りor Satori). It was here that Siddhārtha understood the truth of human suffering, freeing himself from the cycle of reincarnation and becoming The Buddha. In his lifetime, The Buddha taught others the truth of enlightenment and some later would became Bodhisattva, (菩薩 or Bosatsu), to continue his teachings and guide others.

In my profession, Buddhism has many body poses, hand gestures and mantra that are also used in Kundalini Yoga. I use many of these gestures in my lessons and I am moved by the philosophy and spirituality they hold. Though I am not a practising Buddhist, The Buddha has influenced my way of life and I would like you to have a similar experience.

I have carved some Buddha statues out of locally sourced pumice. I also draw the Buddha with Japanese Ink, (墨 or Sumi), to hang as room decor. If you are interested in having an image of The Buddha near you while you mediate or do yoga, please fill out a form below with the name of the Buddha you would like to adopt.
