Noriko's Corner - What are Jizō?

Updated: Feb 4, 2024

Jizō, (also known in Japan as Jizō-san or OJizō-san), are statues that are believed to spread a healing energy. In Japan, you can see groups of Jizō statues lining temples, alleys or trails. Some temples are known to have over 100 Jizō statues.

In Japanese Buddhist teachings, Jizō (originally known as Kṣitigarbha which means 'Earthly Treasure'), came from India to Japan to share his knowledge of healing. He is seen as a protector of children and patron saint of children who have died. He is also seen as a bodhisattva who is able to heal or

help people when they are having problems in life. Because of these beliefs, Jizō is very popular in Japan. Many Jizō statues, (big and small), are carved of stone and dressed in red cloths.

Though the Jizō statue I create are made of pumice, they still embody the healing qualities of stone Jizō from Japan. They make great presents for a loved one who might be having health problems, or are great to have in the garden; they will age with moss in time, making them look even more mystical.

Please get in touch if you would like more information about my Jizō statues - I have a large collection available.
